The story
In Kotpad, on Odisha’s southern edge, the Mirgan community dyes cotton with the root of the aal tree — a slow, entirely natural process that takes weeks before weaving begins. The result is a deep earthy brown no chemical dye can copy, and it ages beautifully with every wash. Kotpad was among Odisha’s first crafts to receive a GI tag.
- Fabric
- Coarse-count organic cotton, aal-root natural dye
- Size
- 5.5 m × 1.2 m
- Care
- Cold wash separately with reetha or mild soap; dye deepens with age
A genuine handloom piece. Small irregularities in weave and motif are the mark of the weaver’s hand — no two pieces are exactly alike.
