The story
Pasapali takes its name from “pasa”, the ancient game of dice, and its chessboard squares are among the most demanding patterns in Sambalpuri bandha. Master weavers of the Bargarh–Sonepur belt tie and dye each yarn by hand before it meets the loom, so the motif appears on both faces of the fabric. This black-and-red silk takes three to four weeks on a traditional pit loom.
- Fabric
- Pure mulberry silk, handwoven double-ikat (bandha)
- Size
- 5.5 m × 1.2 m + 90 cm running blouse piece
- Care
- Dry clean only; store wrapped in muslin, away from sun
A genuine handloom piece. Small irregularities in weave and motif are the mark of the weaver’s hand — no two pieces are exactly alike.
